A Potential Case of Therapist Fraud?

Here’s something to ponder…

Dr. Judy Keith.
Many dissociative survivors might be familiar with this name. Judy Keith is the program director on the Trauma Unit at Timberlawn Hospital, one of the best-known inpatient programs available for dissociative survivors. She also maintains a private practice in the Dallas area.

Today, I noticed that Dr. Judy revised her website for her private practice.

Where it used to say “Judy Keith, Ph.D.”, it now says only “Judy Keith, MA”.

What does this sudden change suggest?
(And it was sudden – last week, the site had “Ph.D.” in all the places where, this week, it says “MA”…)
What happened to the Ph.D.? Did the degree get lost over the weekend?
hmmm… that doesn’t sound very likely…
Ph.D.s don’t just expire or vanish – so if she is no longer claiming to have this degree, there must be a reason…

What it suggests to me is that Judy Keith probably wasn’t a Ph.D. at all – but she was claiming that she was in order to receive the status and benefits of the advanced degree, and someone caught her at this fraudulent game.

I believe this because it makes the most sense, given the evidence available to me.

For anyone unfamiliar with the process – if a licensing board is alerted that a degree is being fraudulently claimed, the person is given a certain amount of time in which to remove the fraudulent reference from all advertising and business-associated material. I can’t think of any explanation that better fits the fact that Judy Keith was a Ph.D. on Friday, and on Monday she was just a plain old MA.

Criminal charges may also be filed in connection with this kind of misrepresentation, depending on the degree of the fraud involved.

Why are the penalties so harsh? Well, consider the implications…

If “Doctor” Judy’s claim of possessing a valid and relevant doctoral degree is fraudulent, then countless survivors — both at Timberlawn and in her private practice — have been defrauded. This is definitely the case in terms of self-representation (it would be hugely unethical for this woman to represent herself as a doctor if in fact she was not one), but possibly financially as well. Higher degrees command higher fees — what if she’s been charging rates commensurate with the possession of a doctoral degree that she doesn’t have?

And this so-called “doctor” has not only been misrepresenting herself to her clients; she has also been acting as supervisor to licensee candidates or newly licensed counselors, all of whom also believe they’ve been working with a doctor. They too have been defrauded – but even worse, if this woman has based her entire career on a lie, then what has she been teaching to the younger generation of counselors who have worked with her? One can only hope that she has not been teaching them to follow in her footsteps…

And what about the fact that she has been claiming a doctoral degree in connection with her work at Timberlawn – didn’t they check her out? Maybe not well enough… but regardless of the errors made in their background check, the hospital would still be a victim of this woman’s pervasive fraud.

This suggests a really important (but often neglected) step for anyone who is seeking a new therapist: confirming the credentials of a prospective therapist is an easy and non-intrusive process. The state licensing boards for the various mental health professions maintain online and publicly available rosters of their licensees. It is perfectly acceptable to ask prospective therapists what license they hold — and it takes only minutes, once you get home, to double-check the rosters of the appropriate licensing board in the appropriate state and confirm that what you were told is true.

Most of the time, this check will come back clean – most people don’t lie about their professional credentials, precisely because it’s so easy to check them out – but obviously, some people do. So we really shouldn’t rely on anyone’s word, or trust that someone else (like a hospital) has done our checking for us, especially not when it’s so easy to do ourselves.

Our therapist is someone who might well end up learning profoundly personal and painful information about us… but how would you feel if you were one of Ms. Keith’s clients? I think we can all afford a few minutes out of our lives to spare ourselves the possibility of ending up in that kind of situation.

This is a simple way that we can keep ourselves a little safer — not from any big bad evil, but from the smaller and pettier wrongdoers and self-promoters out there in the world who might try to take advantage of our vulnerabilities. Being a therapist is no proof against being a self-interested fraud, but our therapy is the last place in the world where we want to be subjected to that.

  1. I think anybody that so blatantly lies about
having such degree, and thinks that she will
not be caught or reprimanded, is extremely
    arrogant.

Anybody that googles her name and spends 5 minutes
actually looking at the current discrepancies in
her web addresses and her actual title (that is there
now) and the different way she is addressed and
spoken of, will see the lies.

How many MA’s address themselves as doctors or have
a PhD after their name…I am guessing not many.

Spend another 5 minutes, and you will come across
resumes and articles, that use her as a reference and
refer her to as “Dr.” and there is no MA mentioned.

    Arrogance

  2. Hello Julie –

That is precisely what we were thinking. We’ve been following Judy Keith for a while now because she offers supervision.

WELL… can’t tell you how glad we are now that we weren’t ready, never contacted her, never got involved with her. The changes she made this past weekend are very superficial, but it’s made the discrepancies stick out like sore thumbs.

And YES — arrogance is definitely the word for it!
I mean, can you imagine the gall it would take to pull off this kind of fraud???

I called the LPC board today, just because this really got me curious — and it turns out, SHE IS NOT LICENSED AS A PH.D.!!!

So it really was a total lie that she was selling.

    *shakes head*
    Some people…
I hope the Board revokes her license.
People who tell lies like this, thinking they won’t get caught, deserve to suffer the full consequences for their arrogance.

  3. She does have Ph.D., and it is in an area of Psychology.
    Leave it alone.
She is a very good therapist, very ethical in her interactions with clients, and meant absolutely no harm.

  4. Hello Kelly.

No, Judy Keith is not licensed as a Ph.D. Her board confirmed it — and so did she, as a matter of fact, by changing her website to remove the reference to the degree. If the degree was valid, she wouldn’t have done that. That’s the kind of thing that only a liar does.

Judy Keith is just another liar. The facts prove it, so you might as well face it. Reality can’t always be what suits you best, and lying to yourself (or anyone else) won’t make it so — you would be better served by just dealing with the truth as it stands. Not that that was ever your strong suit, but I thought you might have matured some in the last year. Guess not…

Oh well, thanks for stopping by anyway — it’s always nice to know you’re reading. :)

  5. I’m still giggling about Kelly, aka Secret Shadows, telling me to “leave it alone” – the irony is just killing me!

Kelly can’t let anything go, no matter how wrong she is, and she lies like a dead dog trying to get people to agree with her. She has admitted to being involved in online smear campaigns in which she manufactured numerous lies about the person she was smearing, and she is not above outright slander in the same way that the street is not above the sun.

And she thinks she is going to tell me not to share the facts I’ve learned? When they are FACTS? And she runs around spreading LIES like shit in a mushroom farm?? *snort* yeah okay…

Kelly, in the matter of Judy Keith (or anything else), I will be happy to “leave it alone” in the same way that you leave things alone. I’m sure that should give you great comfort.

Gads, I can’t stop laughing! This is one of the most fun weeks I’ve had in ages. :)

  6. RockerGirl,
Just wondering, is that where all the stuff on Kathy Broady came from? I did a google search on her name when I was looking into joining her forum, and came across a few nasty reviews. (I checked her credentials, and looked for a history of complaints with the TX licensing board, and found those nasty reviews to be false.) Just curious.

  7. Hi S&co –

    Thanks for your comments.

So far as I can tell, the vast majority of the stuff being said about Kathy Broady is being spread by the organized abusive groups (cults, sex slave rings, etc.) and the individual predators that she has pissed off in the course of her work.

Kathy is one of the few therapists who is willing to work with people who are still trapped in their abusive situations in adulthood, trying to help them get out.

Unfortunately, she comes in for more than her fair share of crap because of that.

The perp groups obviously don’t want her to succeed, so they would like to discredit her by whatever means possible. Sometimes they do it themselves, if the anonymity is secure enough, and sometimes they will turn their victims on her instead, using them to do the discrediting.

Any survivor who has experienced organized abuse in their history should recognize this tactic for what it is – it was used against all of us too.

The minority of the crap is being said by people like Kelly, who hold a personal grudge for whatever reason – every therapist has their share of disgruntled patients who didn’t get what they wanted out of therapy and hold the therapist responsible for the failure.

I’m glad, though, that you had the common sense to check things out for yourself and to see the situation for what it was – gossip and rumors and lies that are more reflective of the people saying them than the people toward whom they’re directed. You might (or might not) be surprised at how many people don’t exhibit the same level of intelligence when it comes to gossip.

Kelly is actually a perfect example of that, since part of her issue with Kathy arose from listening to and believing gossip.

It kind of goes to what I was saying in last Friday’s post – we have to think for ourselves. Letting someone else tell us what to think, even if it’s just to the extent of believing gossip, can lead to some pretty damaging things. There’s really no minor damage that comes as a result of letting others do our thinking for us.

In this case, Kelly is doing her best to damage Kathy, even to the extent of being willing to tell some pretty egregious lies in order to make it sound like Kathy actually did something wrong (instead of it just sounding like Kelly whining) – but Kelly has also done damage to herself, if you consider the amount of time she has likely wasted being bitter and resentful over issues she picked up by listening to gossip, issues which had nothing to do with her and which were likely far distorted from truth by the time she ever heard them.

It’s kind of sad, because a little less gullibility and a little more critical thinking could have prevented all of it.

And it relates to the issue of Judy Keith as well, because apparently she’s been perpetuating this fraud for years – and apparently, nobody thought of checking her board rosters to confirm that she was licensed the way she claimed she was.

Liars and frauds and manipulators can show up in any situation and come under any guise – so yeah, thinking for ourselves is just crucially important.
